Seagar Park Residences is a development of 11 terraced houses in 2 Dave Jamieson Road, a long and winding site, sitting beside a branch of the homonymous park.
The brief was to provide a design to include 10 units for the real estate market and one larger house at their head to be the developer’s house. The mixed destination led to a balanced approach to compensate financial efficiencies and the desired high quality architectural outcome.
The design was driven by the need to provide a range of different unit sizes to better please the market, each of them to access the park view and the westerly evening sun to that side, and the easterly morning one from the road side. The intent was to give a feeling of an organic whole and at the same time to preserve the identity of every single dwelling, without falling in relentless repetition.
The response was of a slightly angled row of buildings, to follow more efficiently the site boundaries and negate the sight of its full length from street, necessary to reduce the perceived scale of the intervention and generate a smaller neighbourhood feeling. The sinuous row is then accentuated by two story high volumes coming proud at each side in an alternate fashion, to expand and relax the rhythm solid-void at each side.
The house at the northern end of the development has been designed balancing the needs of outdoor living enthusiasts with the exposed nature of the location. The design provides highly glazed and openable surfaces, yet maintaining privacy through a higher floor elevation and a system of sliding shutters.
